Currently I am a higher education consultant working with a number of institutions; see my teaching page for more details and contact me if you wish to discuss any projects. Until the end of January 2015 I was the Principal Academic Staff Development Officer in the Staff and Departmental Development Unit at the University of Leeds. My roles included:

  • leading the L&T team
  • promoting and supporting educational development for staff across the University
  • course leadership for a number of UKPSF accredited and credit-bearing courses in learning and teaching including those at postgraduate certificate and postgraduate diploma levels
  • working with individuals, teams and schools to enhance the student learning and staff teaching experience.

I was recognised as a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2014. I was awarded a University of Leeds Student Education Fellowship [USEF] in 2002 and a National Teaching Fellowship [NTF] in 2005. My NTF project – support for international staff – is described in more detail on my projects page. I managed the University’s USEF scheme and supported NTF nominees and winners at Leeds. The University currently heads the league table of NTF awards.

I have worked with a wide range of universities and colleges, both nationally and internationally: workshops; consultancy; reviewer; and external examiner – see my teaching page for more details.

My latest significant publications are:

  • Butcher, C., chapter 6 – Describing what students should learn in Fry, H., Ketteridge, S., & Marshall, S., 2015. A Handbook for Teaching & Learning in Higher Education. 4th edition. Routledge.
  • Butcher, C. (ed), 2013. The Learning & Teaching ebook.
  • Butcher, C., Davies, C., & Highton, M., 2006. Designing Learning: From module outline to effective teaching. RoutledgeFalmer.
